Default Numbers match- How do I know??

Can I tap the expertise on this forum to help me with 2 questions when buying a used C3 vert?
1. What exactly am I checking to match on a numbers matching car, the stamp on the engine (where) and the body serial number under the windshield? What numbers should match? Do all the numbers and letters have a specific meaning (ie car should have xxx)?
2. What would be the top 5 things with a used C3 to be weary of? Something that absolutely needs to be checked?
Thank you for your time.

Here's where to look for the number on your engine if you have a small block. The lower picture shows the window VIN number. Notice how they match as far as the serial number goes. Others have much more info. 194670S (on my car means GM, CHEVY, Convertible, 1970, St. Louis). The rest is the serial number of the car as they came off the line.

I would absolutely check the frame for rust in the rear wheel well area.

A tip:

If its got A/C...bring a small (but bright) flashlight and a small paint brush, rag, or something to clean the stamping deck area to be able to even read the numbers on the block.
The block casting number is below the right bank head, top of the right bank block, under the A/C compressor and compressor bracketry (is that a word?)
Dont bring something metalic that will scratch the area...ya need something to clean and make the numbers visible.

Default besides the rear of the frame,

be sure to check out the frame of the windshield (birdcage), they say its easy to check thru the door opening where the tag with paint and trim #'s are. Peace,,,Moosie

Not to hijack this thread, but I've been wondering about my numbers as well.

Engine block: 16S426010 and V03070KX
Windshield VIN: 1Z37L6S418050

I'm guessing that I don't have the original motor since the last part of the block number doesn't match the VIN number, but I'm wondering what motor is actually present. Is it even from a Corvette? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
