Default change over auto to 4 spd?

So I've been searching for a 68-72 project and I keep running across the automatics and find that for the most part they are less expensive. Aside from it being a sacrilege to covert a #'s matching car, what are the issues in changing over an auto to a manual? I'm learning about these awesome cars and have found this forum to be very helpful. Thanks!

I used to have an 80 that I changed to 4 speed. From what I can remember the hardest part of the job for me at least was removing and hanging the new set of pedals. I enjoyed the manual trans, but Looking back, I should have left the trans and swapped out the motor for one that actually had some power. Good luck

I was told by someone that there's a welded piece on the block of a manual that attaches the clutch likage. So in therory if you swap out the auto you have to swap out the engine. Is that true?

Sound like they mean on the frame. On the frame you would have to weld a little peice for the z bar to mount to. On my 80, even the auto cars had 2 holes in the top of the frame for this peice to bolt to. On the earlier years it gets welded. The other end of it goes to a ball stud on the block. Nothing gets welded to the block.

I would like to add if you are going to do all that work you might as well put in a 5 speed TKO 500 or 600.

I would imagine you will have to modify the console to accept the 4 speed shifter. Make sure you can find all parts needed for the job before cutting.

Back in 1969 I help a fellow change my 64 Impala over to a standard. The job was pretty easy, but then again it wasn't a Vette.

So is the ball stud on the block of an automatic?

No stud there now, Just the threaded hole in the block for it I would think.

I did this on my 69 last year, pretty easy "bolt in" job.
The hardest part is finding all the parts.
Pedals, clutch brackets, z bar, springs, bellhousing, clutch fork, flywheel, clutch, shifter, shifter plate, trans, trans mount, speedo cable.

I used a later bolt in clutch z bar bracket on the chassis rail. Auto's have the bolt in cross member which makes it easier again.

It is alos the best mod I ever did.

That's what I was thinking too! So do you know what that mod actually cost you. Trying to determine difference between buying a car with our without. Thanks for all the info!
