Morning fellow Corvette owners. I have a question regarding a 74 BB. I recently purchased this in October of this year. It is original except the previous owner enlarged the pipes from 2.5" to 3". My question; is this ok? Also what kind of mufflers would you recommened. I have always wanted to go Flowmaster but with so many choices on the market I wanted to get some feedback from you to see what other types have worked for you...and what has not.
The change from 2.5" to 3" would only be nescessary if there was some very serious modifications to the engine, you might even gain some low end torque back if you went back to the 2.5". The muffler choice comes down to a couple of factors one being how loud do you actually want it, what kind of tone do you want, how important is interior resonance to you (do you like to be able to talk to your passenger while going down the highway?), and how important is the performance aspect? I've done my exhaust 3 different ways now, first was stock (awfully quiet and boring). My next setup was with 1 7/8" primary hooker super comp headers and delta 50 flowmasters (this was a good balance of performance and driving comfort, was easy to talk in the car while on the highway and decently loud when you wanted it). Now my Current setup is 2 1/8" hooker super comp sidemount headers along with their new high flow mufflers in the sidepipes, (this setup is pretty loud and a deffinite performance boost over the previous setup, pretty much the opposite of the stock setup). So a lot depends on what your looking for an exhaust to do for ya.
