Hello,
I found an ad for a set of headers for my 73 454. I noticed that many people are running 2.5 inch pipes to the mufflers. What is the difference between the 2.5 inch and the 3 inch collectors. With a stock 454 ( no high performance add ons ) would the smaller collectors be more efficient to use than the larger ones? Would the 3 inch collector be needed if the engine was not stock and developing more horsepower?
Thanks for your comments and education.
Here is the ad that I found for a set of headers. For Sale - Hooker Super Competition Headers for BBC Corvette (years 65 to 74), may fit other applications. 1 7/8" primaries, 3" collectors. 3000 miles on them. Not coated. These are tuned (all primaries are the same length) headers (cost $434.95 new). Price is firm.
The collector is where all the pipes merge and will be between 3" and 4" diameter depending on the primary pipe diameter (you have to get to the 1.5" primary pipes before you see anthing smaller than a 3" collector). The end of the collector for street headers, like those advertised, will have a three-bolt flange on the end. What you bolt onto that flange is a reducer/connector that takes the collector diameter down to the size of your exhaust pipes. You can go to Jeg's or Summit and look up the reducer under header accessories. You would use a 3" connector only if you were trying to mate the headers up to a 3" exhaust pipe.
Thanks for the reply.
So the primary tubes are ok, and it probably has a 3" collector bolted to it. But if I have 2.5" pipes, then I only need to buy a 2.5" collector to bolt to the headers.
I think that is what you are telling me, and if so, it looks like $200 for these headers might be a good buy.
