Mine is right on top of the steering column. I never have to take my eyes off thetrack or road. Besides the stock tachs sucks and bounces aroung a lot so you never really know what rpm it is at when going through the gears. Very consistant shifting and times since the light was put in.

Yep, Same place on mine. If you have your eyes open, you will see it...lol
It's kind of necessary for the LS1. It revs to fast and hits the rev limiter pretty hard at 6200 rpm. This just remindes me to beat it by a milosecond.

Funny - I bought an MSD shift light from Summit when I first built the stroker. Over and over again, I tried locations for it and never liked them. It's still in a box three years later, unused (except for testing it to see if it worked!)
Us it when racing for shifting on the road courses and to let me know what the rpm is when autocrossing. Bought one with the rpm pills to adjust when it turns on. Have changed pills in-between runs at autocrosses because I did not want to shift out of first gear. I will bump the light on and off instead of shifting.
Not C3, but here is the shift-light install on my '79 Z28:
I made the mounting bracket from a scrap piece of sheet-steel, using a band-saw, file, hammer and vise:
I also put a 'shorud' around the lens (basically, the lens cover from an older/broken shift-light..... note Black electrical tape and sheet-metal screw-heads ), so that sunlight on-top-of/behind me doesn't play a factor in not seeing it when racing.
I intended to mount another light in the nearer hole (under the dash-lip ), for 000% chance of not seeing the flash instantly, but have decided to not race the Z28 much-anymore.
For a C3, with a much-shorter dash-board, and steeper windshield angle, this would be much-more difficult, as your hands/knuckles might bump the shift-light:
as stated above, I'd consider a mounting bracket off the front of the firewall, and an exterior-location, or 'under'/'inside' the rear of a high-rise, cowl-induction hood.
Like several of the others I have mine on top of my steering column and it is bright enough that I can keep my eyes on the track. The link below shows it in action. (Please don't mind the granny shifts it was one of the first times at the track with my TKO 600 and I was still getting use to it).
