Default Car just keeps on running.

Had the dash out of my 79 to do some work and put it all back together last night. Started it up to make sure the gauges worked. Everything is fine except the the motor keeps running even with the keys out of the ignition ??????????? The key buzzer also keeps on buzzing with the keys out. The only thing unusual is a large orange wire down by the fuse box that looks like it should plug in to it. I have not noticed it there before and am not sure if it should be plugged in or has anything to do with the ignition. Any thoughts ?

It sounds like the ignition switch is out of adjustment or defective. The orange wire, I believe, is for the power windows.

The actual ignition switch is down near the brake pedal on the column. The switch is activated with a rod connected to the key cylinder. Sounds to me like the rod is bent, disengaged, or in need of adjustment.

Thanks for the replies. I tried all the functions of the car and everything seems to work except the air conditioner. Could be what this wire is for. The manual is no help on this one. If anyone could post a picture of your fuse box on a 78 or 79 with air it would be appreciated. As for the ignition switch it looks like a pita to work on. How difficult is it to change. Does the dash have to come out again??

Thanks Rich. I hate electrical problems because I know absolutely nothing about it. My luck I will plug the orange wire into a receptacle I think it should go into and the next thing I see will be a huge blue flash with sparks. Someting like your 4th of July.
