Default Stray cat?

Are you the only "car guy" or gear head in your family?

I am. My brothers have no interest. No one on my wife's side is remotely interested in cars and I get almost a look at most gatherings.

The few friends I do have couldn't afford to restore or hot rod an old car.

I guess thats why I hang out here on the forum.

Comments.

My brother in law is the only one. He is how I met my wife. We have been hot rodding cars for 25 years now.

My father in law was into drag racing when he was younger. He is now in his 70's has a motorcycle and is forever going somewhere on it. He buys me car parts for birthdays and Christmas. It was his idea to pull the motor to rebuild the front suspension. It was that one little job that made me wind up with a red hood.

Same here

No one on my side of the family cares for that stuff or can't afford to play....I mean no one.

On my wifes side most of them appriciate old cars (for my sake I guess) but have no desire to build or buy.

They just get a new car every few years and call it a day.

My mother-n -law says I remind her of my wifes dad, he was into fixing up old cars before he passed (he died in a wreck back in 89...never met him).

So I'm kinda by myself, except for my wife....but thats not the same as having a buddy that's into it too.

I bet thats what car clubs are for

my dad was an old school hot rod guy....always had the camaros (sp),impalas(sp) with beefed up motors and suspension..... he bought a 74 vette in mid 80's and we had it until 96 ish or so...... he helped me rebuild me motor and was always there when i had a bad day..... he was surprised that i took apart the whole car and was rebuilding it..... he used to stop by every so often to see how i was doing...... i really want to buy him a vette so he can have some fun and maybe build himself a motor...... he's a great guy........

all my other uncles are dorks......none of them really talk cars....just computer talk and job talk.....gets real boring at family events.... my mom has 9 sister and 3 brothers......(1 brother passed rip).... i have a few cousins though that have cars though..... street/strip type..... my cousin kj actually got me into audio systems and lowriders back in 1990...... so i guess i have always wanted a hotrod/lowrider......

Yep, except for a cousin who is a professional welder and has put together a gorgeous 57 Bel Air. Actually, it goes further than that. Of all the people I work with, I am almost the pretty much the only car guy. Most of the others are into wines or somesuch.

One of the nice things about living in Sourthern California is there is gear heads and car shows everywhere. Our local drag strip only closes for two weeks out of the year. I live with walking distance of at least 5 hot rod shops including JE pistons, CPT transmissions and Nitrous supply.

My 18 year old is very much into cars, his only problem is he loves Mustangs. He has a '73 coupe he's been restoring for the last year and a half. He's not much into car shows. . .yet, I think that'll change once he's done with his car.
The wife enjoys going to car shows with me but sometimes gets bored. She also likes going to our Corvette club events.

I'm the exception in my family, but I fit in with the inlaws:

- Father-in-law collects and restores tractors
- Mother-in-law collects sewing related stuff, especially thimbles
- Brother-in-law is beyond collecting civil war stuff - he now makes cannons
- Sisters-in-law both collect something.

i am grooming my boys so i'm not lonely in my old age......my older brother reads about cars but has no hands on knowledge , my younger brother has no interest.....mom and dad were college professors and they have little to no interest, although mom has more knowledge then dad since her father was a mechanic before he passed away in the 40s... my wife absolutely hates this stuff and is always saying she is a garage widow....there are a bunch of guys around who like to tinker ...

Generally speaking none of my family members or the people I work with have the least bit of interest in cars. My wife is oblivious, which is probably OK since I don't get questioned about the money. My grandson (11 years old) is very interested since working the tools, etc it is an exciting form of play for him and I do encourage him. I'm sure by now he nows how to use a lot of tools better than most adults.

My interest?? I consider my self an engineer and I like working with things and with my hands. I was in my teens when all the 60's/early70's muscle cars were in vogue and I wanted to participate in that experience. Anyhow at this time I had no money, a VW was my DD. Later I got to buy a 69, a 68 and now my 70.

None of my peers are interested in cars. My perseption is that there are less and less people that know how to do things with their hands.
