Barrett - Jackson ?????
Is anyone watching BJ on speedchannel today....I admit, I've attended a couple of the Palm Beach auctions and really enjoyed seeing the great cars....BUT....stop the MADNESS These folks have lost their mind ! And who are those two PINHEAD comentators that mumble while the auction is going on ? They are pitiful - they don't know what the hell they are talking about / they suck !
OK...I feel better now..... ..... Happy New Year !
One of the boneheads is Brock Yates, writer for Car & Driver Magazine. The organizer of the "Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea" dash from coast to coast that was run back in the early '70's. This was the inspiration for the "Gumball Rally" and "Cannonball Run" movies. Yates participated with a '71 Dodge Challenger with a 440.
I always thought Yates was somewhat knowledgable about musclecars and cars in general but I lost all respect for him during his BJ auction commentary. It was then that I found out how little he really knew. It just goes to show how money and connections can go a long way in promoting the persona of a knowledgeable car guy even if the carguy in question is really a total doofuss.

The British dude is embaressing to listen to....I'd like to slap him ! Someone should quietly get him and escort him off the property. I had no idea that the other guy was Yates....He was a respected 'Motor Trend" & C/D kinda guy for years. What happened to him ? The whole Barrett Jackson scene has made the "hobby" unreachable to many that truely love it. I am glad I bought a few old dinosaurs befor everything went nuts !
I used to enjoy BJ a lot more. Now it is such a spectacle it is more horrifying than fun. Used to be prices seemed high but you could sort of rationalize them thinking cars must be extra nice to be accepted into the auction, but lately it's just gotten ridiculous and not even representative of the hobby.
And the commentators do occasionally just say stupid, wrong things. Today, 63 FI vette vert comes up for auction and they mention "all matching numbers" and they explain what that means, including something to the effect that matching numbers means the car has all the same parts it had when it came from the factory. (maybe not those exact words but that is what they said)... without mentioning that a matching number part in no way implies "original" and could be a part manufactured last week in China that just happens to have the correct number stamped on it.
They also imply that Barrett Jackson somehow certifies that the cars are "correct", "real", "certified", "genuine". I believe they are gone over in the most rudimentary fashion and certainly not well enough to weed out some fakes that are obvious to people knowledgeable about specific makes.
