Default Underbody Shield / Insulation

Do any of the major Corvette manuafacturers sell the plastic or metal shields for the cabin flooring? Is there insulation foam that goes with these as well... I found Ecklers Underbody Blanket Insulation (A8458L/R), but not the shields. In the AIM, I found the shields Pg J94 Item 6) , but not the insulation blanket.

This was on my 69 when I bought it..the shield is not metal..it is flexible.....trying to determine shield material...it may be roofing material...??? I think stock metal shields did not have insulation behind them..but not sure....???

Works good....plan to clean it up with new insulation...

Excellent Picture - thanks. This shows the shield and insulation... I just need to figure how the 2 fit together, as the sgield is basically square and the insulationlooks like a really fat letter 'L'.

I figured that I would make aluminum ones anyway at a later dtae - once I got the plastic ones.

I can try an get a better pic today so you can see shield from the front....I do have a pic of a metal shield from another vette some place...but this shield is of some heavy material and covers entire slope of footwell....think this is better than metal...IMO

In my case, the insulation is just stuffed between shield and footwell...it is not glued on probably because of the heat affecting glue ???

VERY confusing when it comes to these shields. "EARLY" 69 used the off white plastic toe board shield, while "LATE" 69 used metal.

My Aug. 69 still has the plastic.

The under body shields are rectangular metal, bolted/screwed to tabs riveted under the body and the cross member.

The big "L" insulation??? Hmmm. Some had it, some didn't. If your car had it, you'll find approx 17 clips riveted to the underside of the body. These are the "trans insulation" type clips, the ones that cut your fingers.

My car never had evidence of the "L" insulation. To the best of my knowledge, there was no insulation under the rectangular metal shields.

68's are different too. Chuck

Yes, they were rather flexible, not flimsy, but flexible. Chuck

Here's some pics of the passenger side shield and insulation that were on mine.

My car is an early '69 according to the VIN.

Here's the shield:

It is some kind of "plastic" material, as you can see it has been melted. I assume it got too close to something hot. It is white in color, under all of the dirt and it is flexible.

These are some pics of what is left of the insulation:

It looks like the mice got at it.

Hope this helps.

I just got two more pics of my shield....the metal rusted one is a pic from a 69 or 70 vette I got months ago:click on thumbnails

BTW: the metal one is off a vette that sat in a swamp for two years..the current owner is restoring it....

nice pics - thanks... I want to order the plastic ones - maybe a Dr Rebuild item....

From what Chuck said, the L insulation extended into the transmission tunnel. If I understand all, that L tab might cover or bridge an exposed area between the floorboard and the tunnel... ?

I wonder if the metal ones had better insulation characteristics - or whtehr GM was just saving $$. Wouldn't aluminum be best? and then add the insulation

My opinion is the metal ones would hold heat longer...I have the tunnel insulation, but right now I can't wiggle under vette to get pic..and that garage floor is cold...
Thanks Chuck..you just solved my head scratching over this shield stuff...

I checked Dr Rebuild - on page 95, they show not only the firewall shields (shown above in pics) but also what they call Underbody Heat Shields. Doc states that the UHS goes under the seats.... It looks completely flat and does not have any tabs like the firewall shield. Guess I was using the wrong term.

Since Doc's prices in the book and website are out of date - anyone bought some lately and know what to expect to pay for any of the pieces we discussed?

Note the holes in the under body shields. Those are the holes used to bolt them to the brackets. If you don't have brackets, you'll need them too, then you'll have to rivet the rears to the crossmember.

The front uses the same bracket as the toe shield. You need 2 brackets for each rear. Chuck

Chuck - Got it - thanks.... I will look up in AIM for the rear Crossmember - didn't realize it went that far back. Guess I could use small bolts too rather than rivets - as I am not worried too much about originality.

Corvette America also has al the pieces you need. It was confusing to figure out how the underbody insulaion went in until I realized it passed over the crossmember.

You know - that's funny you mentioned that. When I pressed 'submit' on my last post, I realized that the L insulation was not for the Firewall Shields - but it was in fact for the Underbody shields. But not until you just mentioned this, I was thinking that the L or 'crossover' piece was on the front side of the Transmission. By what you are saying - the L crosses over the rear of the Tranny....

OK - it takes a bit - but I am getting there!

I just can't wait to get the Beast runnin' again - it is going to be sooo different.

The short part of the "L" is at the front of the transmission tunnel where it is wider. The seperate tranny insulation piece covers the rest of the tunnel.
