On a '72, is there anywhere from the engine compartment that the battery can be charged (with a trickle charger)? its sort of a pain to always access the battery compartment and charge it from the inside of the car.

i would only do this on the battery you don't want to find out you have a wiring problem from mice or anything when you have a battery charger hooked up and you are watching a game and eating popcorn
I have "hard wired" a Battery Tender harness on my 63 and have the hook-up in the front grill (had to add about 4 feet of wire to the harness provided). After driving, I hook up the harness (quick connect) from my work bench.
Battery Tender makes a sub-compact tender that's the size of a pack of smokes or the mouse of your PC. You can attach it & leave it attached to the battery and plug in cord you can hang in a conveyant spot under the car and plug in when not driving.

you know the right way to do this is to go straight to the battery.....if you don't like crawling around back there then hard wire a set up to the battery.....i wouldn't be fooling around with this set up, fires do happen and they really get your attention

What's the difference, starter, alternator or at the battery. Unless you have a physical breakdown, they are all connected to the battery. Thus you can charge it from the back of the alternator since it is on top. anywhere you have 12 volts (or 14 whatever it is) and a ground you are as good as at the battery terminals.

I charge from the alternator fwiw.
Unless you disconnect the cable from the battery, it is all connected anyways.
I have a float charger. It's about the size of a pack of cigarettes. In the kit came 2 adapters for the battery, one had alligator clips, the other had loop end fasteners.
I disconnected both cables, put the loop fasteners in, and tightened the cables. I then ran the connector out through the bottom of the battery box and zip tied it to ???? can't remember.
I reach under the car and fasten the float charger to the wire hanging below the battery box. Has worked that way for years for me. Chuck
