Default Final Engine Selection and a few last questions....*edited*

So after many months of bugging the folks here, looking at different options and different vendors, I think I have made my final selection.
>drum roll.......>
I am going to go with a Jasper (slightly higher cost but incredible reputation with everyone I have talked to) Class II 383 (the 385 hp version in turnkey form). I had a few last questions / items I was hoping folks could help me out with before I place my order (probably in the next week or so).

1. Torque converter to lock up to my Th400....I am thinking of a 2400 stall speed
2. In order to get fitment under the stock hood, I am going to have to go with the performer intake. Will I also need a drop base aircleaner? If so, will I likley have fitment issues with the air cleaner hitting the top of the HEI distributor?

Thanks
Shane

based on my experiecnce with my 77.....the 2400 stall speed is good a number although it may be a bit high if you do not have a locking torque converter, mine is a 2500 with the 700r4 and i think i would have been equally as happy with a 2200 stall speed, you don't want the torque converter to be slipping at highway speeds

i think you will need a drop base air filter but you may be able to use a regular type after market one and not get a really deep one and it should not hit the HEI. if it does touch the HEI, just slightly open up the internal throat a little by tapping it with a ball pien hammer and you can get a little more space. you didn't mention which carb you are using...i'm using a 750 speed demon , 1/2" spacer, heat shield and TV bracket

Shane I don't pretend to know alot about engines that's why we have friends like Bobs77vet. But what made you go w/the Jasper 383 w/285hp over the GM crate 350 w/290hp. just curious thinking about swaping out my tired L48

I think, more than anything else, is their reputation. I have talked to quite a few people (my old boss wh put one in his 70's bronco, the local shop who has dealt with them many. many times, a family friend who used them for his boat motors, etc etc) and everyone says nothing but good things. They a well known national company and appear to have great service. Plus, they will ship me a turn key engine which has alreayd been tuned and tested. More peace of mind....

Shane-

Care to share the price you were quoted for this motor? What kind of tq does it make? 285hp seems really low for 383ci...

Just curious..

Sorry, just realized I made a goof on the hp numbers. The estimated numbers are 385hp/440tq (though the number I get will be slightly lower due to the different intake). The price for the motor, turn-key package including dyno tuning and testing comes out to about 6800 (also includes delivery). I need to work out the final details, however.

Actually usually happens every time I go to buy beer. Have gotten to know the beer buyer at one of my favorite local spots and evertime I go in there I end up coming out with a LOT of high octane beers. Good thing is he also gives me freebies and discounts almost every time.

I bought my engine from the Engine Factory last year the rebuild of the car was finished in September and the engine run in by November so I was quite keen to put it on a rolling road. The opportunity arose jusr before christmas, the Engine Factory claimed that this was a 430 HP engine with 425ft.lbs torque so imagine my dissapointment when the dyno run showed only 350hp at the flywheel with a similar amount of torque. For the moment I will give them the benefit in that the engine was running seriously rich (as it must have been when they bench ran it) so I will tune the MSD as per Lars and then set about the Edelbrock carb once I am happy I will take it back to the rolling road and try again and if the figures are not drastically improved, I may have to have words with my American lawyer! I will keep you posted.

That's why everything cost $100. What? That's what it cost & that's what I'm sticking with.

Oh 385hp is a horse of a different color, now I get it........

It is possible to fit a victor under a 73+ hood. Im not sure what hood you have. Mine to some coaxing to fit and it doesn't look pretty. I also had to use the top of the hood as the lid.If not I whould go with your current plans for the intake with a drop base.

In the photo you can see how its angels the same as the hood. I had to angle it down some so it would fit the hood and seal better.
