Alright here goes. Didn't pass ca. smog, all ok except the NO, max allowed 533 ppm measured 1151 ppm. what would cause this and how do i correct it. i'm thinking that high has to be the cat. Any ideas?
That was my problem,as well...EGR on the 78....
The cat would restrict power and you would notice that...if you change it,install a 3" high flow cat..carb approved here...got mine at Ed Hansen's...
Rich
Edit..run premium and make sure that cat is hot before going into that sniffer station....

TIP:When these EGR's don't hold a good seal(vacuum) they cause high NO....what happens is crap gets on the metal seal area..sometimes you can clean the seal ring and cure it..if it ain't burnt or cracked...I fixed one on my Trooper recently..but you are better off with a new one...

got the egr Wed. thinking about a new oxygen sensor also since they are used in sync. BTW, this is my 94 ranger with 138,000 miles that i'm talking about. Never had a smog problem with it before, guess the high miles sent up a red flag.
thanks for the help

Oh..thought we were talking about your 78 vette....Ford ?....yeah,change ox sensor and check that your manifold/exhaust bolts are tight...no leaks...also,check your gas cap..that alone can cause your "check engine" light to come during test...I know all about that one...I failed because of a $11 gas cap on my Trooper...pita..

Oh yea, that's another can of worms, the guy said that the check eng. lite is burned out. It doesn't come on when you turn the key on. I looked at changing it and you have to almost remove most of the dash to get to it, unless your hands are the size of an infant. may just cut out the plastic lense in the front and get to it that way then replace it with glue.
MAN, I HATE SMOG CRAP
