Anyone smell exhaust fumes in their interior like I do? When I drive, I usually have to leave the windows down.
I know I have an exhaust leak somewhere because the exhaust sound just doesn't seem right when I step on the gas. It sounds raspy instead of throaty is my best description.
What are all the possible places exhaust fumes can enter the interior (e.g., steering shaft, etc.)? Can fumes enter through the floorpan where the shifter is?
Also, what is the black stuff that Chevy uses to seal the holes where the hoses/wires enter the firewall? Mine is cracked around the hoses/wires.
That's not good. Sounds like a major exhaust leak near the manifold/(headers?). It wouldn't be so strong if it were below the car IMO. Rather than trying to fill the holes in the firewall, I'd fix the leak first and then worry about sealing around wires/hoses into the cockpit.
It sounds to me like you have a good reason to upgrade to a nice header/side pipe kit. If it's stock exhaust, I'd go to a true duel system. You won't regret it!
Now that I think about it, a while back somebody mentioned buying a smoke machine (used for a dance DJ) and ran it into their tail pipe. They were easily able to spot the smoke pouring out of the leak. I'm not sure what's in that stuff but if you can't ID the leak after a while it might be a last resort.
i had that exhaust smell so bad the wife wouldn't ride in it... took off the passenger side manifold and a small crack was the culprit....took care of it with a set of hedmans hedders....all is well
how is the weatherstrip seal on the hood. it seals the engine from the wiper tray when u close the hood,,when they get old the seals shot and engine smells get sucked down the wiper well into the **** pit(fan pulls them right in) if you have cast manifolds like i do there's a ''doenut'' inside the flange that seals the pipe to the manifold, they wear out also causing a exhaust leak(usually see carbonwhere the leak is) i saw the guy at the muffler shop when he was done doing my s -10,,he had the engine runnin on the lift while he walked underneath w/ his hand feeling for leaks

i made one once for the shows we used to do in the old days in the bands,, i used dry ice( dropped inside the vaccume w/ some water in it) and a vaccume cleaner, put the hose on the blower side ,,, the rps of the vaccume are too high so they have to be slowed down w/ a reastat,,when the motor spins slow the smoke starts pourin out...motor too fast nothin comes out till the rpms drop then youll see smoke,,then you could hook it up to the tail pipe i guess! i wanted to use duct work for this setup into a drum riser so the smoke poured outa the drum kit riser
