Finally I took it to the Vette shop that I use and he did it for me.

Hi,
I know this subject has been discussed before, but I was unable to find any info using the forum search feature. I am not the best mechanic in the world, nor am I the worst. Can someone please explain the #$*#&# door hinge spring and how to replace it on an 82? I just don't get it!!!
Any information is greatly appreciated.

You will need a tool to install it. Many Corvette vendors sell it. Being cheap, I took a Taiwan made screwdriver, heated it and put a bend in it. You install the spring and then use the tool to "pop" the end of the spring in place. See if you can find a pic in a vette vendor magazine and duplicate the angle of the bend if you want to make a homemade version.

Tom, I've got the same problem. I bought new hinges from Zip for the drivers door when I had the body repainted two years ago and the spring just popped off a few weeks ago. I don't want to remove the door, so if you figure it out, please let us know.

I replaced mine a few months ago. As I recall, slip the top of the spring down into the top hole in the door jamb. There is a top and bottom to the spring, so look at the broken spring you are removing or the other door to get it right. The bottom post of the spring will be below and way to the inboard of the hole it needs to line up with. Use the special tool to pry the spring over so it will line up with the bottom hole in the door jamb. Once you have the spring lined up with the bottom hole, tap it in from the bottom. It is easier if you have someone else do this as your hands will be full. I was worried the spring would work its way back out but I guess the tension holds it in place.
