Default Sand for sandblaster

where do all of you purchase your sand for your sand blaster, not the cabinet type but the outside/blast type. i saw someone here other day who was getting 100lbs for 4 bucks. What do you look for, where can one find it? Ive been screening play sand but this is getting old.

I bought it at the local industrial rental place. The stuff I bought was blast furnace slag and called "black beauty". It ran $12 for 100 lbs. It works pretty good but makes a mess.

If you want to see what it looks like click this link and go half-way down the page http://71corvette.100free.com/100205.htm

I've heard of people trying to use play sand but it causes lot's of problems with clogging.

I used Homedepot's 30 mesh sand... It's like 4.50 a bag (60 lb). I tried the playsand... <~~~~Junk. The 30 mesh worked perfect for me. I believe I went through something like 80 bags!!! Make sure you have a quality charcoal mask. The silica is very harmful!!!!!!

I reccomend these folks here http://www.consolidatedstripping.com/pages/1/index.htm

Lots of product, fast shipping too. I blasted my rims there and they came out great.

Good luck DB

DON'T. USE. SAND. Unless you really don't like your lungs, then go ahead. Buy glass bead, aluminum oxide, crushed garnet...something like that that's sold for blasting.

Regular sand can hurt you badly! That Black Beauty stuff is pretty good especially for the price. Throw the sand away now!

I screen play sand, it's cheap. Quickcrete used to sell pre-screened sandblast sand but quit about 5-6 years ago. Do wear a hood and a mask with filters.

Buy yourself some screen door mesh to screen it with, I used Lowe's play sand and it works well after it's sifted. Buy yourself a respirator filter also; the dust can cause silicosis, a potentially deadly irreversible lung disease.

A good mask with filters is a must. I use regular general purpose masonary sand from Home Depot. The filters I use in my mask are for pesticides. I have had friends put in the hospital from silicosis, and it is a terrible thing to see someone go through.

I sift my sand with some aluminum replacement screen for windows tied over a five gallon pail.

It's easier to just spend a bit more money and buy blasting media that WON'T KILL YOU!

Even using my slag an old house screen came in handy. I actually put the same slag through the blaster serveral times and I had to use the screen to sift the debris out of it.

I still say go with actual blasting media. Sure you could probably get regular sand to work, but sandblasting media will do a better job since it will hold up better and will probably be more abrasive. I imagine the sand would just turn to dust on impact.

Default sand use

Hey all, I posted a few months ago about this, so I'll summarize what's already been mentioned: Make certain adequate steps are in place when blasting with sand outside a blast cabinet. To me, "adequate steps" means a dedicated respiratory system using air from outside the blasting area. Even when used outdoors, it takes very little silica dust (common in "regular" sand and still abundant in blasting sand) to mess your lungs up for life. Silicosis is non-treatable and 100% lethal given enough time. I'd really like to see the members on here around for a while WITH their lungs intact. Use some other blast media. Maybe more expensive in the short term, but a lot easier to live with than carrying around an O2 tank for the rest of your shortened life.

Yep, the only OSHA compliant system I have found for silica media blasting is a fresh air breathing system like the one from Hobby Air or 3M. If you read the lables on all the cartridge masks they all say on them "not for use with abbrasive blasting". I have heard the same thing goes for paints containing ISO's, although it seems a lot of people still use them while painting. I think they start out around $375.

I have Israeli civilian-issue gas masks and filters for painting. Cheaper than masks/filters sold for body work, and they filter better. My local army surplus wants about $25 for the mask and one filter, and $8 for each extra filter.
