I bought the Jegs engine cart/stand for storing & rolling SBC blocks around.
So.... I decided to try it as a cam "break-in" stand.
Set up the engine with it's correct radiator, hoses, etc.
Built a radiator support stand out of 2x4's and threaded rod so I could adjust the height to match the engine. Found a belt to run the water pump & fan.
Used a pair of C2 rams horn exhaust manifolds and a set of burnt out sidepipes to contain the noise & avoid warping an exhaust valve.
Drilled two holes in the top of a 5 gallon low profile gas can, and inserted brake line to match the lines to the fuel pump.
Used an old points distributor & C2 wires for ignition.... including the ballast resistor.
Started up first crank.
Tweaked it up to 1800-2000 rpm to break in the cam.
After 5 minutes, the used fuel pump began dripping... swapped it out with a new pump I had sitting around.
After 15 minutes, the FelPro one piece oil pan gasket started to drip at the front... so I'll have to yank the pan off & figure out what the deal is on that.
Boo FelPro.
The gasket is from the correct kit for the application... KS-2687 (same as Seal Power 260-1243)
and I followed the correct installation procedure... as I have done a zillion times before. Oh well... at least the engine is still on a stand and I can get to it no problem.
Anyhow, despite Chicken Little telling me the engine will torque itself over on it's side when I started it, all went smooth.
So now you know. You can run a SBC on Jegs engine cart with no worries.
FYI
Now I have to pull the valve covers off to see if the Summit roller tip rockers actually roll, or if they just sit still.
I whould have braced it have more protection against tipping over.
Yes... since I had no idea what was going to happen, I admit I was a little bit concerned about that. I work with PhD Physicists all day long, and they had me thinking. So.... I went home & looked at it closely. Ha.... I had sidepipes mounted on it (very tight) so there was no way it could roll over.
Anyhow... the stand & engine are very solid even when I blip the throttle. So as far as I'm concerned, case closed. The rollover myth is busted.
I have those too and easily mount a 350 & Th400 or 4 speed on it. I'm interested in the start up too. I thought about doing the same thing last summer but ended up installing the eng & tranny in the car. Still haven't had the time to fire it up yet! I bet you fit in with those Phd's pretty good there Tom!

Good idea for a temp run-in stand.
Makes my think of making a somewhat larger cradle with bracketing to just bolt on a support with radiator & gauge board once ready to run-in cam.
Well if i ever upgrade to alum radiator i know what to do with the old brass core rad.
I'm thinking just some wider feet for casters and extensions on front to bolt up a radiator. Not a lot of modification for this. The remove radiator for eng work and storage.
Well it'll have t'a waite for a new welder first.
