Default VIN location???

I went to look at a 1968 convertible this weekend and could not find the VIN on the car. Looked everywhere I could think of however never located it. Where did I go wrong? Where is it located? Also one other thing, does New York issue a title? Seller in Pennsylvania did not title in their name when they acquired the car and what I was shown appeared to be a New York registration. Is this correct?

The vin should be on the drivers side visiable through the windshield on the drivers side. also the serial # should be stamped on the boss on the block under the heads on the passengers side. vin # should be on your 68 194378s400001-194378s428566

I have family in Keasvile(sp) It is nice scenery up there. The vin number can also be found on the top of the frame near the left rear wheel. You may have to use an inspection mirror to see it.

A Pennsylvania title would have to be noterized by the seller who signs the title. The NY transferable regestration the last time I had one was a small piece of paper about the size of an index card, and it was white with blue writing.

Default Title

Its real easy, call PA State Police and ask for Inspection Unit. I think they will tell you it will need a reconstructed title with no VIN. You can also call a notary but without the VIN in PA , you will have to get reconstructed. I think I am right, but let me know for sure.

If it's got a NY Transferable Reg,all you will need is a bill of sale.Find the Vin #on the frame and make a rubbing of it on the Bill of Sale,(So you can prove it's the same car if need be)Make two copies and have them Notrorized with sellers sig and your own.Keep one copy for yourself and one for DMV.As long as there is a Vin on the car you should not have a problem.

They're "title flipping". It's a way that non running, or project cars are sold from owner to owner without ever transferring the title. It's illegal, because the state involved gets "cheated" out of their sales tax.

Now, I'm not going to argue sales taxes , but that's the truth. When I bought my 54 in about 1982, it came with a 1967 Delaware title. It had been "owned" by about 6 individuals removed from the Delaware guy.

I'd be REAL LEARY of a car with a missing/rusted VIN tag, a car that will potentially need a State assigned VIN. A state VIN is the "kiss of death" with resale value.

Many refer to cars like these as cars with "voodoo" tags. Chuck

I walked away from the deal. Too many things did not add up. I found this car in the C3’s for sale section but I will not name names. I was told car was “completely numbers matching” and the title was “clear and good to go”. The first thing I discovered was the car color and trim tag did not match. The response to this was “O didn’t I tell you that” The VIN could not be located and seller’s wife would not allow me to drive the car. Although I stressed before driving 575 miles to their location, I would not purchase the car if I could not drive it. Seller had a potential cash buyer for his $18,000 car in the backyard but could not come outside to discuss. Instead wife had to continue to running back and forth with different excuses as to his absence each time I asked a question.

When I got home I went to the forum page to alert other potential buyers to beware, only to discover the entire thread is now gone from the page. Not sure how that can happen as there was several replies to the original post by the seller.

This is my first and hopefully my last bad experience with another forum member. I asked the right questions and was totally mislead. I’m sure you can imagine my disappointment after driving 1150 miles, spending $150 on gas, and another $190 in motel bills only to arrive home EMPTY HANDED.
