Its shorter and easier to type then convertable, its like talking online. we type things like "did u see Bob's new vert w/the 427 bb" we're guys. we own vette's (Corvette's), we work on our own toys write Q&A's (questions and answers) of ea other and type w/two fingers and 1/2 of us can't spell for git (ur's truely included). Get w/the freaking program

The term started with big block Vettes and it means "
Vert icle Lift Off" because if you stomp on it from a stand-still it will lift-off vertically

Not sure that "vert" is unique to Corvette's, either. I've always called (any) convertibles "vert's" for as long as I can remember.
However, when I call my car a "roadster", some people here get all technical on me...

That's because the last Corvette to be a roadster was the 1955. From then on they are convertibles or coupes.

the word 'vert' has a latin origin, it comes from the word 'vertus' or 'vertituus' (but this one is more roman slang..) and means 'posible to open'. Latin in general, but mainly romans of the first century after chris, used this word to describe the posibility of opening their internal patios and let the rain in..'vertitus patius' so the rain could get into big tanks and make a water reserve for the summer.
that's why we use to say 'conVERTIble' for a car that can be opened up
