Default '78 Pace Car Question

Ok all, please just hang in here with me for a minute ... I have a C5 and am willing to admit my limitation of knowledge of the C3's. That's were I hope you all will be able to help me out.

I have some one I know that is willing trade his '78 Pace Car C3 Vette to me for another car that I own (not my Vette). His car has Approx. 21,000 miles on it and is and is in very good shape. It's the 185HP model with a 4 speed. It is the tradational black & sliver paint with a spot on the left front fender were the paint is starting to spider. The rest of the paint is in good condition, but does not have the Pace Car graphics, and the interior is the silver, in very nice shape. The seats show some wear, but no tears. The car is all stock and 100% numbers matching with the exception of the quartz clock he put to replace the non-working one. PS/PB, AC, AM/FM, power windows, tee tops.

My question(s) here are as follows: How can I tell if the car is a "real" Pace Car and not just a knock off Pace car. Are there certian things that I could look for?

Baseline -- What would one figure a car like this, if it is indeed a true Pace Car be worth. I'm guessing about 20 grand ... but that's really just me guessing. What do all think? Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

check the vin number, pace car vin numbers are 1Z87L8S900001 thru 1Z87L8S906502. if anything else, it's a clone..I was looking at one not too long ago, true original that has been stored for 12 years, guy wants $15,000.00.

Hawaii is right on with the VIN series...that is the only discriminating difference except a console plate that states its a Limited Edition. Of course that can be cloned as well.

If its a clone...value can drop $8k from the $20k your estimating. It sounds like it has quite a bit of wear for a 21,000 mile Pace CAr. The engine stamp pad and transmission would also have a VIN derivative stamped on each...a derivative is essentially the last several characters of the VIN. Keep us posted.

Don't worry about the grahics they did not come from the factory on the car, either the dealers or owners put them on. They came in a packet with the car

All -- Thanks for the info/advise so far. It's much appreciated. We were just in the talking stages and I wasn't seriously thinking about possiable moving my car until recently. Still not so sure I do ... COPOs are hard to come by. Even with no motor or trans.

Dont the original Stickers that wernt put on worth alot of money? My dads friend used to work at a chevy dealer in 78 and he said that people that ordered the pace car would just give him the decals because they didnt want them.
Someday i plan on cloning a 78 pacecar with my 78, Idk they are so nice looking.. but i wish my car had 21k, U sure its not 121k?? is there any sure way to tell, my car reads 24k because of the resetting at 100k. So could i tell people it has 24k on it instead of 124k???

The car doesn't show the wear of a 121K car, i.e interior looks clean, no tears, etc. This guy that has it collects Pace cars. Camaros, etc. he says that he the 3rd owner. The first owner was some one related to or someting to do with the dealership. The 2nd owner was going to jsut store it, but then decide to use on and off for a year or so before offer it to the guy that has it now. He really every uses it as it he like 9 cars and does like driving a stick any more.

I think that it being a 4 speed Pace Car makes it a little more rare than others. "Good Luck"
