Default Best way to lift rear end

CF Gurus,

I will be replacing my rear spring soon and will need to jack up the rear end and get it on stands. Can I safely lift under the differential using a floor jack? If not, where/how? I'm guessing I will need to chock the front wheels?

Thanks again

I always lift the whole car. Jack from the side at the trans. crossmember, put stands in front of the rear wheel and under the front lower A arm at the shock mount. Then do the other side. Never noticed any body flex doing it like this. Some find it a tight fit getting a floor jack past the spare tire carrier to get to the differential. Also, there's usually exhaust pipes in the way.

I have sidepipes making it hard/impossible to sneak in from the side. Also, I have removed the spare carrier so I have easy access to the diff. Thoughts?

I always raise either the front or rear all at once, but use a 2"x 6" on the jack pad to distribute the load and protect from crushing. I do the rear from under the diff with the 2x6 positioned left to right and long enough to overlap the spring mount. Jack the front from under the crossmember with the 2"x6" positioned front to back and long enough to overlap the crossmember. Bring it up slowly in stages, alternating front to back......not all at once. Mines up 20" now, (truck stands) but took three stages to get it there.
Never crushed, bent, broke, cracked, or otherwise damaged anything.

Yeah - it's OK to lift from the diff .... just remember that you need to lift up
on the spring end to loosen the end bolt ... and this can lift the
frame off of the jackstands - and potentially shift around.
Be careful and put a pair of vice grips or a Cclamp on the spring
for your floor jack to catch on - or the jack will slide right off
the spring - BOOOOING.
