Crate? Stroker? ...........I can't decide. One part of me wants to keep the unmolested original intact, the other says stroke it. The simpliest thing to do is buy a crate motor, which I'm leaning towards, but the cost are a concern. I have to crunch some numbers on this one....
u gonna be giving her hell? or gonna be rolling on the nice sunny days and laughing at the cars wanting to race and kill themselves? answer the ?s and ill tell ya what to do
i hear ya" . I am in exactly the same boat with my "80". Make sure you let us know what you decide. I am finding the 383 stoker the most interesting option at the moment. However I do change my mind from day to day. Brent

Tough question to answer. I'm not into racing, but I do like to hammer it every now and then when the situation is right. This will be a weekend driver, hopefully with enough power to keep the ricers at bay.
One minute I'm strokin', the next cratin'..........
rebuild the stock shortblock with decent forged internals, afr 165 heads, edel int and carb, and a nice crane cam...MSD ign and your done...nothing expensive, but it will hammer down some nice hp, low 300s at the wheels if pushed through a decent t350 and 2400 stall...
A high pressure cleaner-preferrable steam if you can find one. Brake cleaner works really well. I also like using old toothbrushes and a heavy duty nylon brush.

Crate 400hp 350 crate engine assembly.
$2990.00
how can that not grow on you.....i think thats one heck of a deal...i think they want to make it into the vette market and this is there way of promoting there stuff....all to your advantage
forgive my ignorance, but why would you want to get rid of the original engine?
You don't get rid of it, you put it on an engine stand so you can sell a matching # car. The original engine in an '81 is a dog as are all of the smog years. What year/engine is in your 'vette?
If you want to go faster, without possibly harming the original engine, you use a crate or built short block/engine from a reputable engine builder. I used theenginestore.com
