I would custom rod anything I had short of an original L-89 or L-88. I would not do anything that is not reversible even to a matching numbers base engine automatic, so it could always be returned to stock if someone down the road wanted to.
I don't believe there is such a thing as an original L88. They were basically race cars. I have located several cars over the years with L88 credentials, and all were missing original block. Most had heavy mods to bodies (roll cage, flares, etc.) and suspension. Some of the better documented cars I know of, (the 67 Gulf racer) do not to my knowledge have the original engine. Disclaimer - to the best of my knowledge.

I think the spelling is Semershein, Jim. He makes original looking replacement panels. I have one of his radiator shrouds and it looks original. I got it at Carlisle. He is the only one I know of making "correct" panels.
Corvetteworx is a supporting vendor and usually an active forum member. They sell assembled OEM style front ends, ready to install. Fairly reasonable pricing as I recall.
