Getting ready to have my LT-1 fitted with new exhaust (stainless) and wanted to see pic's of installed xpipe's... I have a pic of one installation which puts the xpipe just in front of the spare tire. I was told today that the xpipe needed to be as close to the engine as possible for it to do any good. Looks like it needs to be just under the tranny, in front of the cross member...advise. Anybody feel or hear a difference with the X Pipe? Sure would appreciate some input... thanks!!!
i read that you should paint a line on exhaust, and install x-pipe any where the line burns off. so your thinking is right, you should be closer to engine.
Thanks a ton guys!!! Rihwoods, looks like your xrossed between the cross members and just before the spare...looks nice. What does it sound like? Rodesms, interesting!!
NHvette, is the drone directed at BB or SB too?
Fl_rider, yes that is a nice system and I have the same pic (saved). This is the pic that I showed to a local builder (Rods). He is the one that told me that the x-pipe needs to be near the engine. He said that it does not do any good if its located in the rear. Maybe, Motorhead and 71 roadster will chime back in with another viewpoint. Seems to me, that we do not have much of an option. This builder is going to call me back in (hopefully) this week so he can show me a 71 LT-1 (customer) where he installed it just below the tranny. He says it's tight..but it will go... Advise! Don

interested in this information also as i have been told the same thing,
too far back doesnt accompolish the intended results

I understand their "theory", but I completely disagree from experience! The year before last, I took the PICS that "71 Roadster" posted (I'm pretty sure they were his) to a local shop and asked him to build mine EXACTLY the same in 2.5" pipe (I supplied the Dr. Gas "X")! It made a HUGE difference in performance and sound. A slight drone from time to time, but a little more go pedal takes care of it!

I think you would be sorry if you did this - first time a rock hits and crushes it you'd be pizzed!
It's for that reason my 3" exhaust runs thru crossmember, with "X" right behind it...and no rattles at crossmember...think now I will delete "H" which is still at rear under pumpkin....
Thanks guys for the input, wow, sure are alot of opinions on this subject. I spoke to a corvette mechanic today (the gentleman that did my TA's and diff.) He said, that the Xpipe is basically useless on street machines, ummmmm go figure . Needless to say, some more opinions would sure be appreciated. Thanks Don
As soon as I get my car back out of one shop (currently getting a 6 speed tranny and other things) it is going to a place called Miami Muffler (that did an excellent job on my current car with all custom mandrell bending and x-pipe...see pic). I will be having them put the x-pipe as close as possible to the Jet Hot Hooker Super Comp headers on my 69 L46. As you can see on my other car...the closet we could get was just behind the tranny and I absolutely love everything about the setup with the Magnaflows...the sound, no droning, extremely quiet at cruising, but definitely opens a can of whoop a$$ when I hammer the throttle. Unfortunately, I had the X-pipe installed just before I had custom headers made so I don't have any back to back dyno comparisons of just the effect of the X-pipe, but here it is before (totally stock) & after (headers & exhaust) dyno pulls. I should have my vette back in the beginning of March and will post pics of my setup when it is done and also try to get before & after dyno numbers. The below car is on a 4.5L *** V8 with a 7,300 redline.
Totally Stock Dyno Run
Dyno Run After Headers & X-Pipe Without CAT's....much flatter the curves are now as the car pulls much more consistently strong to redline
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
For people to say it does no good that far back would have to dyno the car, put the X pipe in that location and dyno it again, I wonder how many have done that ?
There is an optimal position for the X pipe I am sure but to say it does nothing under the rear diff, you gotta back it up with some numbers, I say it doesn't do as much as putting it just behind the headers. I put mine on to mellow out the sound, don't really miss the 2 HP it would give me if I moved it up further towards the front
Carpedm, nice post! Thanks for info. Yes, I will be going with the Magnaflows as well. Needless to say, sure would like to see those pic's of the completed project as it sounds reallll nice. Again thanks!
Motorhead, yea... I can relate to the dyno or rather the lack of it. If we are only talking of 2hp....ummmm. Not to worry...Sounds like you as I are only looking for sound or rather the lack of it(drone). Do you have yours running? IF so, how does it sound? Thanks a ton and have a great weekend! Don
