Default Drop Base Air Filter Housing

I have a mostly stock '79 L82 with air. I am starting to do dress up work in the engine bay and I am thinking that my next purchase will be a crome air filter cover. I am going to pull out all the plastic cool air induction pieces and want a nice looking crome cover. I was thinking of going with the K&N set up and was wondering if I needed a drop base to fit under the hood (I have seen them in other discussions). The hood insulation is long gone and I kind of like that look - so I am not thinking that I will put it back in.

What is the general opinion out there. Pics would also be helpful.

Thanks

There has been engine work done by bubba but I have not done any yet except for maintenance. It looks like a stock one but I am not 100% certain. If I had to put $$ on it - I would say stock. As to the specifics, I do not know.

My future plans are to build an engine and drop it in - that will include more actual performance parts. Currently all I want is dress up parts.

I don't think you need one but most after market air filters are a drop base. You could buy one jsut to be safe becuase its not gonna hurt anything.

Dual snorkle cold air induction is the way to go. Leave it on, and buy a chrome top, if you must.

My problem is I cannot fit the cold air induction, with a RPM Performer, under my hood.

Cold air = power.

THis is more a cruizer that a preformer. I want as much stuff to shine under the hood as I can get. My plans are to build a 383 in the next couple of years which it will probably have an intake with longer intake runners - remember in the future. That motor will have a serpentine belt setup and as much polished billet as possible. Most of the shiney goodies should be able to be swapped over and some would be ok either way - like a master cylinder. I am in the process of filing the emissions stuff into can #13 - lucky me being in MS and having an antique car.

I know that cool air = more hp - but what am I looking at if I were to remove it - what kind of reductions.
Should I care about the reductions if I am just cruizin and not racing.

Glen242, if you want cold air, then the answer is simple, get a taller hood & use cowl air. The factory set up is junk for high perf use. It was designed for fuel economy & emissions.

Mostly stock - emissions stuff is mostly gone - no cats, ect..

Prob more than 200hp but nowhere near 300hp.

All I want is a little get up and go when I hit the gas - I will not race it or anything like that

Are you saying that, given a choice, you would use an after market open element air cleaner over a stock dual snorkle air cleaner?

The discussion was not about cowl induction hoods, etc., but removing the stock dual set up in favor of a lot of chrome pieces.

------------------------------------------------------------"Its fine if you have 200 hp."

What a stupid thing to say! Expect statements like this from an A**H***.
