well i went by corvette express today and talked to the owner about getting the bottom end of my engine rebuilt. he quoted me a price of $1600 for a rebuild and that is with the expectation of reusing my block, crank, connecting rods, and cam. he said he wants to put in new pistons and bearings and build the bottom end up like a L82. they are going to take it apart and see if it needs to be bored again and what was causing the bad compression. from what i told him he said it sounds like the piston rings may have been washed out from excessive fuel. so what do you guys think?
see what 2000 will get you..... once they take it all apart under there, mine as well throw in some new stuff.......then you just have to do the top end in a few months and you'll have a new engine....
the engine was rebuilt about eight years ago when my mom owned it and she had all new pistons rods and crank put in at the time and after the engine was done the guy that rebuilt it put it back in the car and tried to get it running again but it never ran right and wouldnt idle on its own and you could smell gas a half a block away so im suspecting he washed the rings like what the owner at corvette express was telling me. the one good thing is that there was no rust inside the engine when i took it apart to put new heads and intake on it and also to replace the gaskets on the engine with new ones but it looks like it will be getting new gaskets again. here are some pictures of the engine after it sat for 6 years after it was rebuilt.

Just an idea, I built a motor for my '69 Camaro using a Wheeler Power Products short block and after two years of me abusing it is still a good piece. It's a 4 bolt main 010 block with balanced crank and rods with forged Probe flat tops. I used a Holley Systemax 2 setup on it and it makes great power past 6 grand. I got the short block to my door for around $1400 or so. Something to think about I suppose.

Just go to a search engine and type in Wheeler Power Products. They are out of Jacksonville, Fla. Car Craft mag used one of their engines a few years ago for a build up and had nothing but good things to say. I run the Camaro like I stole it. It is very probable that I will use another one of their engines for my '80 Vette. That's how much I like it. I've wound it up to around the 7 grand range and it doesn't flinch.
thanks for all the tip and info. i will be giving them a call tomorrow. BTW the 69 camaro has got to be my favorite car of all times.... do you have any pictures?
why not just go with what ya have? If the cylendars are not scored, and the pistons were new (this thing never ran after the rebuild?) get it put back together, fix the carb and drive it like you stole it. Looks like there are lots of oportunities to spend money on it in other areas.

I have plenty of pics but they are on 3.5 disks. We now have a Mac computer with no provision for it. I'll see if I can't make a few shots and send them your way.

as of right now it is still together but when i do a compression test the whole passanger bank shows less than 60psi....... actually one showed 60 and the other three showed less than 5 yes i typed that right the other three show less than 5 on a compression test and when i did the driver side i came up with 140+ on all 4 so something is really weird and i need to take it all back down again and see what is causing it. the engine ran the same way with the original (rebuilt) heads and different intake and carb as it does now with new edelbrock performer RPM heads and the edelbrock fro-flo EFI kit. well i think i will start getting things ready tomorrow so i can pull the engine again and take a look and see if i can figure out what is causing this. as for spending money in other areas there isnt really any other areas that i can really spend any money on now sense everything has been been pretty much covered accept the painting part which i will do later on down the road after i drive it for a while and sense the body is fiberglass i dont have to worry about it rusting sense the paint is far from perfect.well the only thing that i didnt replace on the engine when i had it appart was the crank, con rods and pistons cause it still looked new and i thought it would be ok.
Pull the motor apart yourself. See if the pistons are put in the right way and check to see if the rings are put in correctly... how did the cylinders look?
