I have manual steering without a damper. I prefer manual steering since there is NO lost motion between the steering wheels and the tires.
I ran FAST manual steering until this past year (for 29 years, PS ratio without power). It was still easy enough to turn, but the grip required was too tough on my hands (its tough getting older...).

My 68 (manual steering) has the damper and you barely notice its there till you hit something in the road ( bump, debree, etc) thats when your happy its there

...my very original '68 coupe that has 43K original miles has a damper from the factory. My '68 convertible that I converted to manual steering does not have the damper. Only difference I really noticed between the two is on the '68 without the damper, sometimes you can feel a little front wheel shimmy/shake over somewhat rough bumps through the steering wheel.
