I have mounted a RH mirror on my '72 car for safety reasons.
Bit unhappy with the mounting system though with a rubber plug and a nut being inserted through the drill hole, it doesn't seem to be very stable. Thinking of drilling two larger holes through the inside door skin and squeezing some sort of mounting bracket inside to give better support.
I know people will say yuck right hand mirror but I live in Australia where we drive on the other side of the road and pulling out from the curb with a left hand drive car, can be interesting sometimes.
Any suggestions please.

Mine is mounted like that too. I hate it. Open the door up and put a strap on the inside of the door, and screw the bolts into it. Double nut them!
Huh...Mine's mounted on the side pretty solidly; the rubber plug mounts work like a molly bolt and wedge up to hold my mirror on pretty nicely. I tightened them down pretty good for the mounting bracket, put the mirror on, and have no slop at all.
Maybe I'm one of the lucky few that doesn't have a flopping mirror problem?

When you close your door, does the mirror rattle any?
Nope...actually, no rattle from the mirror...I DO get rattle from the window if it's down, but part of that is due to the lifter springs inside the door being broken (the big coil springs that connect to the scissor lifters have been rusted out and broke and the windows being out of alignment), but the mirror's on pretty good.
I think maybe the previous owner may have put something behind the mirror, because he put these horrible bullet style mirrors that had ZERO visibility from them. The original style mirrors are a LOT better than what we had on there initially.
Ok thank you all for the advice. Will tighten up the bolt a bit more onto the nut and see what happens. I was reluctant to tighten it too much otherwise it might pull the nut through from the other side which is obviously smaller than the hole that was drilled. I don't like the rubber plug idea.
