Default Block Stamp Pad Testing

A while back, I read a thread about having a metal test done that could prove if a engine block has been decked. Does anyone know where you can get this test done and about how much it cost?

Are there any other ways other than deck height and broach marks to help identify if the stamp pad has been altered?

I've never seen a rebroached block that wasn't detectable with a strong light and close up examination

I don't claim to be a stamp pad expert by ANY means but to me that pad looks a bit questionable.
The numbers and letters are too perfect, too straight and rarely if ever are real stamp pad stampings that neat and straight. During production they didn't care if the numbers were straight or not as long as they were somewhat readable on the pad. This pad looks like someone cared about it and took their time to make it nice and neat and straight.

Please hold the engine closer to the screen and turn up the lights. Could be a Massey Ferguson for all I know with that picture.

I think the test you are referring to is an acid etch. When the numbers are stamped, it changes the grain pattern and density of the metal in the stamped area. When certain acids are applied (I DON'T know which acids), it can bring out "shadows" of the old numbers because the altered areas react to the acid differently than the normal areas.

Seems like I've heard something about a magnetic test, too...

What do the cops use when they try to determine if a guns serial # has been altered, different metal but wouldnt it be the same procedure,, I dont know, only asking. I agree with CGGorman and what he says,, it sounds logical. Peace,,, Moosie
