For the 81, you only need a piece of wire and the code list.
The codes are flashed on the "check engine" light.
I'm fairly sure the Chiltons manual has the code list and info
on which two pins to connect on the On Board Diagnostics connector.
You can probably get a Snap-On scanner updated to the early 90s fairly cheap-maybe $500. Then you will have something that will last and you can get live data-although I am not sure on an 81, 82 I know you can. If you can't get live data, then the paper clip blink codes will be adequate.
