Default removing the hood

removing the hood on the 78 to aid in removing the radiator and fan shroud and eventually pulling the motor.

is it best to remove the hood from the hinges, or to leave the hinges attached to the hood and unbolt hinges from the car?
Any differences or does it not matter either way?

Leave the hinges and hood support attached to the fenders, remove the bolts from the hood. Use a yellow crayon and outline where the hinges/support were attached this will save you the trouble of re-aligning them when you put the hood back on.

hi star

figures you would say that. My buddy that stops by to help me out at times just popped in to see the '78 for the first time and he suggested the opposite p leaving the hinges on the hood and unbolt from the body. he rational was that it would probably be easier to rebolt it on afterward that way.
hopefully more people will chime in with opinions so I can see how others feel.

Yep, I know to scribe a line to get proper alignment afterwards for the reinstall

I've done it as Star79 suggested several times. It is easy to get the hood reinstalled in the same location that way.

Actually, the underhood blackout paint is applied with the hood attached to the hinges. There shouldn't be any paint under the mounting bolts, makes realignment easy. Hinges themselves aren't really painted, just whatever paint overspray happens to get on them.

ok, thanks everyone. I guess I'll leave the hinges and just remove the hood off the hinges.

Kaps, good point on the paint and marking the position.

You'll like it better that way. If you try to get the body mount bolts out you'll find the radiator seals in the way. The hood bolts make this job much easier.

Unbolt the hood. Use a awl to scribe a line around the hinges. The thin line allows exact placement and almost no touch up in that area.
Good Luck

I unbolted my hinges from the hood when I took it off to strip it. Very easy to put back on with a helper.

thanks for the feedback everyone.
A friend is showing up here in about an hour to give me a hand on a few things on the car, helping hold the hood while I unbolt it is one of the things I needed him for - that's definitely a 2-man job as i see it just so one person can hold the hood.
I'll scribe and unbolt the hood from the hinges and leave the hinges on the car.

Thanks all

I've did both ways and one way is as easy as the other. But a easy tip is to install one stud into each side to use as a index and hold the hood while screwing in the other bolt...

If you dont want to scribe into your hood, remove one bolt from each side, place masking tape and reinstall bolt. Trim tape and use as guide when installing hood. I usually do all four bolts......

well, it's a moot point now anyway..........

I already removed the hood from the hinges the other day and left the hinges on the car. Of course I scribed the hood first.

Yesterday as I was evaluating the entire project i looked at the hinges and realized I was going to want to repaint them so I ended up scribing around them also and removing them from the car along with the hood support. They are in the pile of stuff that is going with me to a friends house this weekend so I can use his glass beading cabinet. All the parts get glass bead blasted than repainted to look like new.
