My son and I took the vette out of storage and I took it on a number of errands today to diagnose the rear end whine. (At least that's what I told my wife.) The whine symptons:
- Whine sounds like it is coming from the right rear
- No whine at low speeds (<40)
- No whine on accel
- No whine on decel
- Only whines when traveling at a steady, highway speed.
I'm taking the car in for fluid changes on Tuesday. I was going to have them drain the diff and refill it with Royal Purple. Since the problem seems to be coming from the right side, could there be another cause?
Well, here's an excuse for another test drive. Is the whine more pronounced in a long sweeping turn? If you get the car to lean to one side or the other, does the noise change? If so it may indicate wheel bearings being the source of the noise. Good Luck!

If the noise is coming from the right or left and not the center....should be a wheel bearing. I've already replaced both mine by 70 thousand miles. These aren't a piece of cake to change, tho. Larry
What size tires are you running. Larger tires produce more tire noise. Are you sure it is coming from just one side. At higher speeds, this would be difficult to detect.
mine started whining on the way back fromthe crab cruise last year. At first i thought it was coming from the front but now i am leaning towards the rear....sounds like bearings and when i make a right hand turn pretty hard it will go away....how hard is it changing the rear bearings????
I picked the car up from the mechanic today. (It took a week for them to get the Schaeffer's gear lube plus they were backed up.) He said that it still whines but they couldn't find any other problem. The diff had some small metal particles in the old oil, and is seeping a bit from the seals. He suggested that I put a few thousand miles on it this summer and see what happens to the whine. If it get worse, he can do a rebuild next winter. I've only driven the car a few miles and the whine seems less. I'll have to see what I hear over the next few weeks.
chances are the gears are worn as are the yokes. Drive it and see. I doubt the oil will solve the problem. If you need advice tearing it down in the future let me know.
