Actually it was the local dealerships who did it, going all the way back to the mercury seven. some were free, other were sold on the cheap. some had unique paint jobs others were normal colors

That's one thing I remember from back in the day - the space program was at it's height in popularity and the astronauts were seen quite a bit in their Vettes. Disneyland had kiddie car rides where the bodies resembled C3's. Chevy had cars in cameo roles on shows like Bewitched too. GM really had the p.r. machine rolling back then.
They had one of the gold astronaut vettes at NCRS Hershey a couple years back.
Not my pic (PRNDL's), but I was there ...
Funny - if any of us came up with that paint scheme, we would be
crucified on a giant Chevy Bowtie by most of the C3 folks.
"WTF were you thinking ?"

I like the paint scheme because it's what was cool back in the day. While we might not conjure it up now, I like that it was kept that way.
I'm all for preserving history ... just saying it would be butt-ugly if proposed today.
In fact, this car is the one I spent the most time admiring at NCRS-Hershey.
It is truly unique and well-preserved. (And I love gold/black combo)
