I just bought a 76. The stamp code on the engine is V0813CKB. The serial number (WHich doesn't match the VIN is 120584. What the heck kinda engine is this???? It was supposed to be the original L82....but I think I got lied to.
1972 CKB (not from a vette) was a 165hp 2 barrel carb engine
1973 CKB (not from a vette) was a 175hp 4 barrel carb engine
1974 CKB (not from a vette) was a 185hp 4 barrel carb engine
I didnt find any other years with that engine suffix
The VIN you gave 120584 is the last six production number digits, we need the entire VIN to tell you other specifics about your vette.
Sorry it seems you got duped. Im by no means an expert on VIN decoding, I think there are other members here more qualified to help you out.
Thanks for the response. I pretty much narrowed down the info you gave me from a couple of web sites. Howewver, the serial number doesn't match anything that belongs in a VETTE. I probably have a Chevelle or even Olds engine????? Reckon anyone?
The VIN on the car is 1237X6436575. THe serial number on the engine is in the little letters 12J120584. The big numbers are V0813CKB.
So far I know the engine to be made in Flint, the dates and the fact that it is probably a 350 (72,73, or 74). I would like to know what it could be out of. And I need to know if I definitely need to get rid of the engine and go with a true "corvette" engine.
How does this effect value? I paid $5800 for the car. It is in decent shape. Needs new carpet, door hinges, dash pad. All weather stripping except t-tops needs replacing. Engine runs good, TH400 shifts O.k. Headlight open....slowly.
If I dump $2000 into the interior, and $2000 on a paint job....how bad in the hole will I be on the car?
$2000 on a paint job....how bad in the hole will I be on the car?
sorry, but i dont think you can have it stripped for $2k
i have seen people quote prices on here for paint jobs anywhere
from 5k low end to 12k high end.
this is the main reason i havent taken mine for a quote yet.
Don't mean to burst any bubbles but $2000 for a paint job is if you do EVERYTHING yourself. I am am in the same boat with the paint also. I doubt you will spend $2k on the interior though. A little clean up and possible re-dye on some things may save a few $$$. I doubt you will break eve though (very few ever do). Check on ebay for a new motor would be my only advice for that. Good luck and show us your pics!
You can get a paint job for 2k it just wont be a show quality paint job. You can get one for even less at macco but you get what you pay for.
Your vin is probably 1Z37X6436575
1st 1 = GM Division = Chevrolet
2nd Z = Series = Corvette
3rd/4th Body Style: 37 = Coupe
5th Engine Type: X = L82
6th 6 = Model Year = 1976
7th Assembly Plant: S = St. Louis, MO.
Last 6 digits Production Number starting with 400001 - 446558.
If the car runs decent and is fast enough for you I think you got a good deal and should be happy. You have a 350 motor in the car so there is no reason to find one just because it comes from a Corvette. 350 blocks are usually pretty much the same, the difference is the heads, intake, etc etc that are put on them that give them the extra UmmmPHHH.
Make the car what you want and dont worry about numbers matching since the motor isnt. Welcome to the family.
Does the car run,, and how does it run,, I think that unless you are of the NCRS ilk why bother with a different motor,, if it is a 350 you have a good starting point already, maybe just "freshen up" what you have already and spend the money elsewhere on the car,,, just my opinion,, its your car, your money and you are the only one that has to like it.
Peace,,,Moosie
Thanks for all the info, guys!!! I'm gonna keep it...and eventually get a new paint job. I'm trying to attach a picture....you'll see, she doesn't look bad now.
You can get a very god paint job for 2K, I did. People come over to me at car shows and ask how much I paid, they can't believe it. I know a guy who has a body shop and he stripped my 75 down to the fiberglass, primed and painted it. He's the catch, I gave him the car in October and told him to do the job over the winter when he had time. I got it back in May but it was definitely worth the wait!!
These days body shops see an older corvette and they think you're rich and have money to throw in the toilet. Check around and see if you can make a deal like I did. Just don't expect to see your vette for a few months!
What are your intentions with this Vette? (not my daughter) If you just want to drive it and have fun, state your case. Several would be NCRS types (I'm ok with that) want to maximize their investment only. Everything original. There are a lot of gofast guys here too. A lot of others here have Vettes to drive and have fun. Who are you? I don't care really, but you need to know before you decide you have dug yourself into a pit. When you decide that, then you can set a budget, or lack of one to get to your goal. Whatever you want to do, enjoy your Vette (responsibly). lol
