I am having my original exhaust manifolds for my 72 vette bead blasted and want to re-paint them. Does anyone know what color they originally came from the factory? The car has the 454 motor and I would guess black or silver. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
I would guess they came from the factory unpainted, natural, cast iron. Probably looked rusty within a week or 2. Lots of people use coatings like calyx (sp?) that look sort of natural, or cast blast paint, that looks sort of natural but will lose you a coupla points if you have your car ncrs judged. I have used spray graphite (on the advice of a forum member) which looks a bit dark but nice.
From the factory, I believe the should have had a grey cast iron color to them. Numerous companies make a brush-on treatment that will return exhaust manifolds to this color and should not come off. I used it on my car over a year ago and they still look great.

Jet -Hot Coatings had an original corvette manifold color (silver)about 6 years ago. I had my '68 S/B manifolds done, and they looked great until I sold the car about 2 years ago. They are supposed to keep heat down under the hood too
