Default My First Corvette

I have been reading c3 forums for the last 6 months, and love this place I bought an 80 L48 auto last friday 3-10-06, A BIG DAY IN MY LIFE!!! I have always loved corvettes. My main concern is the area were the steering cylinder mounts to the frame. The frame had a crack, and was welded very chicken poop like. The bracket had to be removed to do this, It looks like the weld was not ground away, before they put the bracket back on? Are 4 little bolts holding the bracket in place safe? I think it would be if the bracket was flush with the frame. But it looks like its sitting on the chicken poop. I have pics but don`t know how to post them.Is this area damaged in collisions? or is this a weak area? Thanks

Welcome from another '80 owner. I'm not sure about the answers to your questions but as for posting pics, you will need someone to host the images. You might try here:

Welcome from another 1980 owner! The PS frame bracket should fit flush against the frame. Sounds like you may need the weld inspected.

Congratulations on your purchase.

How are the welds holding up. Is it safe to drive it like that...hate to be driving a car on chicken poop welds.

How did the frame get cracked to start with. Any history of accidents.

i also have a 80 and love the body lines congrats on your purchase, for your question on the welding, i would take it to a muffler repair shop that i trust and let them look at it usually the guys there are car nuts and very good at welding and usually very reasonable and good at overhead welding.Body and frame shops use mig welder just as does the exaust shop.Of course i also have a local shop that i know the owner. just my thoughts chico

Congrats from yet another '80 owner. As with any other 26 year old car, you'll have to expect stuff like this happening. I'd have it looked at as soon as possible.

Congrats on your purchase! The 80-82 are the most elegant of Corvettes and are my favorite years for looks (not performance). I have owned a 72, 2-81, and now an 82. The 80 is a good year (no computer controled stuff on the engine). As far as the weld problem goes, I would think that it would need to be filed down so everything sits properly. I did have a problem with one of my 81 models. The power steering pulley is mounted to the frame and began to tear off. I had to have it welded back and worked fine after that. I wonder if your case is similar???????

I don`t know the history of the car. Someone told the ex-owner this area was common for cracking? More about the car, I see it has at least 3 ss calipers, has firm pedal, looks great from 20 feet.Shinney paint, but alot of dust and dirt under the finish, Original AM/FM 8 track, rust free frame, engine looks original,, except its missing the right side air intake hose and shroud.Air pump is working. He gave me the distributor cover too, it looks good.Tach not working? 79,000 miles. Really nice interior, antenna is not original. Really nice Aluminum wheels, and goodyear eagle St 225-60-15. $7700 Tried the photo bucket thing & all I got was Confused ?????
