Default Change steering ratio

My 72 currently has the normal power steering ratio set on the knuckle, i.e. the outer tie rod is located in the forward hole of the knuckle.

Did anyone ever change to the rearward hole (which is normally used on manual steering cars) with power steering.

I would think that the steering might improve because it is a bit less direct. However it could be too easy to move the steering wheel due to the added leverage....

Any experiences/opinions would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Thomas

From the 1966-79 Corvette Shop Manual:
"Do not use the rearward hole in the steering arm with power steering equipment or interference may result."

I assume that the booster cylinder must interfere with something if you move the tie rods to the rearward (slower ratio) hole in the steering arm.

I have also heard, but cannot verify, the piston will over-extend and be damaged.

It seems like an odd thing to want to do. Most people want quicker steering, not slower.

If you have a car with manual steering (as I do) would changing it to the normal (slower) ratio make steering effort a little easier? My cars previous owner set the car up with the fast ratio even though it is manual steering. Wondering if chaning it back would make my life a little easier.

It will make the steering much easier, but you will need to re-align the Vette, as the toe numbers will be way off.
