VIN check on-line

I want to see when, where it was hatched and what equip it had when it left the nest.
I know the Jeep dealership ill do a free VIN run for any owner of a Jeep, but I'm over in Iraq right now and I'm buying a Vette from afar. I don't want to get back only to discover something bad that a simple VIN check would have identified.
Thanks!

For that info you need the original window sticker or the build sheet if it's still with the car.
for C3's (i assume that's what you are looking to buy since you posted in this section) the VIN breaks down the information as:
division - Chevrolet
series - Corvette
body style - coupe or conv.
engine type
model year
assembly plant
production sequence #
if it's an '81 or newer it will also include restraint system type on the car.
that's it. if you are looking for other info on options the car came with you are out of luck trying to get that from the VIN

I think that '82 Collectors Edition are vin'd differently also like the '78 pace cars,,, Peace,,, Moosie
Don't try to buy a vette while you are in Iraq, but if you must, try to get a forum member to take a look at it first. There are many of us all over the country that would be glad to help.
The vin search you are thinking of that the jeep dealer does, like a carfax, is only good for vehicles built after 1981. There is no vin history search available for 1981 and earlier cars. For corvettes, there is very little useful information imbedded in the vin. For the 1972 model year they started to include engine information in the vin. For 1971 and earlier corvettes the vin won't even tell you what engine originally came in the car. So your best bet is to have somebody knowledgeable look at it for you! Good luck.
Their are too many if's, and's and why's when buying one of these vehicles. Way too many issues to be hacked out before the purchase of an older one!!! I hacked out a lot of issues with the guy I bought mine from in Chicago, and it was completely restored!! Still their is always the trust factor, you need to look at receipts, former owner info, etc, etc, etc....If you lived near me (of course being home from Iraq), I would be glad to mentor you through this thing. VETTES are great animals, but like any animal, you need to make sure it is safe to own first....(and reliable)Gonzo (the animal)
