I've had a transmission fluid leak from my speedo cable fitting ever since I got my car. I pulled out the metal gear holder to replace the O-ring that seals it to the transmission body and found two things:
1. The threads where the speedo cable screws on are messed up (looks like someone slipped with Channel Locks), which keeps the cable end from being screwed on all the way. I may be able to repair the threads or I may need to buy a new gear holder.
2. The red gear pulled right out of the metal holder and the fit seems kind of loose. Is there an O-ring inside the metal holder that seals against the shaft of the plastic gear?
I looked at Corvette Central, but only found the replacement gear holder for the 4-speed. No luck locating one for a TH 350. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Try bulkpart transmissions online. (ww.bulkpart.com). And no you do not need a o-ring on the gear between the housing only on the housing to tranny case
Try your local GM dealer. A few years back they were still available. The "bullet" is steel now instead of aluminum and wears much better. They can sell you the (driven) gear too.
