Default engine painting day quick tips please

starting with my fresh heads I had re worked I have them masked off like I think they should, all springs etc in that area are masked off and bolt holes so paint won't get in there . What about there the gasket will go what should I do there try to keep the paint light there or what?

You look good to go but I would take the ex. gasket off,put masking tape on and trim around the ex.ports with a razor blade. Good luck and post pics when done.

thanks man, just unsure about one thing I liked your idea of putting the valve cover on to keepthat rim where the valve cover gasket will go clean along with helping keep the internals clean but my before picture shows overspray on that area but would it be best to keepthat rim 100% paint free? here is the before pic

also i don't plan to prime the block or the heads i just plan to primer the oil paint the rest i can just shoot the engine paint on bare right?

Over spray on anything but machined surfaces is O.K. as long as the paint will not come off and find its way into the eng. As far as primer, I have never used any due to the fact that I have yet to find any that will handle the high temps. However if I did find some high temp primer that is the way to go. Also remember that when you paint prep is all important(no oil grease dirt or crud of any kind) and also it is always better to apply thin to moderate coats as opposed to 1 or 2 thick coats. Now get to work like I am(I'm sanding my body for the base coat today)and I'm sure everything will be just fine. Good luck, take your time, admire what you have done and let me see how it turns out.
Talk with you later,
Sly
(hi-ho hi-ho its off to the shop I go...)

I went with your advice about masking it off with tape instead of just leaving the gasket on when I paint it

I just put the old exhaust manifold gasket on and traced that out with masking tape wher ethe old gasket was in contact with the head.....
