when we pulled the motor out of my '78 L82 about 2 weeks ago we removed the fuel pump first because it looked like it was going to be a tight squeeze with it on the motor and pulling it up to clear the front suspension A-arm.
I know reinstalling these things can be a real PITA so would rather reinstall it on the motor before dropping the motor back into the car if possible.
Anyone that has pulled and reistalled the motors on their late model C3's - did you do it with the fuel pump on or off. is there enough to clear the A-arm on the suspension if the pump is already installed on the motor or do I need to leave it off until after the motor is dropped back in?
DEFINITELY install it with it on....just take your time dropping the motor in. That fuel pump is a ROYAL pain in my A$$ trying to get it back on once the motor is in the car.
thanks guys, that's what I needed to know and definitely wanted to hear. I know from threads on the C2 section what a PITA it is to get these pumps back on and figured it would at least be a lot easier to do it while the motor is out rather than after it's back in the car.
As long as I know it will clear the suspension that's how I'll do it.
OH, one last question on this......... I have a new gasket to use obviously, but is it recommended to use permatex on the gasket also to help seal it or just the gasket itself?

you know i would replace that pump while the engine is out of the car....i didn't do it and i wish i had since mine crapped out right after i reinstalled it.....i have this theory that says when you remove them the arm fully extends and tears the diaphram inside....so as long as it was on the car it was ok but once yu took it off that sealed the fate of it

I use Permatex High Tak. It is a spray on sticky substance for gaskets. I use it for fuel pumps and water pumps and all non critcal gaskets. Works well.
gordon, you consider fuel gaskets as non-critcal?? I would consider a fuel leak as pretty critical myself.........
but since you do use SOMETHING besides just the gasket to help seal it that tells me enough. I'll use a thin bead of my permatex as I install it.
thanks
It is not really a fuel gasket. It seals in the oil. There is no fuel there. Being non crtical I mean not a head or intake or exhaust gasket. These either have no sealer or a different sealer. The other "non critcal" are usually just paper gaskets. No gasket is really non critical, they are all there for a reason. I guess I should word it differently.
