Default 72 Side Mirror installation

Hi

Can anyone put me out my missery?
Im completing a 4 year rebuilt on my 72 and cant figure out the re-installation of my side mirrors. When the car went in for respray we filled the "base bracket holes" of the side mirrors. Ive since redrilled these using the template provided with the new replacement mirrors. So far so good. I understand how to connect the Mirrors using the bracket supplied, the mirror locates on the bracket and a Hex pin at the base of the stalk fixes it in place. The problem Im having is figuring out how to gain access to the back of the bolts that hold the bracket in place.
There are 2 small bolts that pass through the door and the nuts somehow need to go on the back of them but the Door sill is solid so one cannot get the nuts onto the bolts, what is the trick here??

Hope that I have explained properly.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks Don

Don,
There is no way to access the back side of the mount with out removeing the door skin. The kits I have seen have large rubber inserts that go into place and then swell out when you tighten them.

I have had both of my door skins off the frame the drivers side has a metal reinforcement attached with countersunk rivets and the pass. side has no provisions for a mirror at all. There is a piece of metal that is in the way that is part of the door frame. That is why they sell those expanding rubber nuts in the pass side mirror kits.

Default Thank you

Thanks for the help, thats a big relief, at this late stage of the game I thought I had finally and totally lost the plot. The problem was that those "expanding nuts" were not in the box with the mirrors, so this lot had me guessing.

They are called well nuts, also used to hold the Voltage reulator in place as well as other misc body mountings. you can find them in two sizes at NAPA or pep boys in their body repair section

No sweat, i figured id save you the three hours of searching I did when i had to replace my voltage regulator. Try explaining to the local lug nut behind the counter " i need one of those collapsable rubber nuts" to which he replaied "i am sorry sir but nuts dont collapse they are made of metal"

Cheers
