From: Kansas City, MO ...I'd like to go fishing and catch a fishstick. That'd be convenient. - Mitch Hedberg
Yes. It was related to the new digital radio displays that had clocks in them. There was no need for a second (mechanical) clock, so they put another guage in it's place. You can tell which car's had it by the opening for the guage. If it is round, it's a clock, if it has a flat bottom like the rest of the guages, it is for the oil temp.
For some reason, I thought the oil temp gauge wasn't offered until 81, but I could be wrong. Looking around the info sites, I can't seem to find anything to back that up one way or t'other.
I'm gonna have to go look, got me confused...I know I have the clock but I don't think I have the oil temp.I know there's a water temp on the left on top,but I think that's it

77 w/ oil temp. gauge w/ flat bottom though it is hard to see.
Any idea where the temp guage is supposed to connect?
Oil temp. sending unit is down by the oil filter. The oil press. sending unit is up top next to the distributor.
'81 was first year with oil temp. guage, only if it had the elect. tuning radio with the built in clock. Otherwise it still had the mech. clock.
Maybe there was some crossover at the end of the model run? Maybe someone added it later, who knows. According to the book the '81 was first, but I would not bet my life on it. Corvettes have a history of late in the model year changes, maybe your one of the lucky ones.
