I having a hard time spending the $400+ for a new dash pad that I need. I know that you can buy the form fitted cover for around $110 but I hear that they don't look so good . Does anyone have a magic recipe for restoring an original dash or is a new one the only route to go?
Here is the form fitted cover I did on my Vet. I did one on my Z (old Datsun) first and it was very easy and fit perfectly so I decided to give the Vet a try. It did not fit very good at all. I had to pull the dash from the car and massage the cover until it fit correctly. It was not easy but it did turn out fairly good at ¼ the price. Not show quality but very good for a driver. Most people can’t tell it is a cover. If you want to save some money and are willing to do a little extra work and not planning on going NCRS or anything like that then I would recommend the form fitted cover.
It looks like Gumpy used the kind that just covers the top part of the dash. My dash was worse that that so I got the kind that covers the whole dash, top to bottom.
Man, that color looks good inside. The dash looks pretty darn good as well. I'm not the NCRS type so I may go with one of those if you think that they are fairly easy to install. My dash is currently out of the car so I assuming that it will be easier to install a dash cover..
Thanks on the color comment. Most people asy me why brown???
It seems that it is not a very popular color but I like it. All my cars are brown inside.
If you have the dash out you are already 1/3 of the way done. The hardest and most time consumming part is getting the dash cover to fit correctly. I had to sand some high spots on my old dash and kind of pull and clamp the cover on untel it fit good. Then I removed it cleaned everything up and then glued it down and taped/clamped/rubber banded it all together and let it sit until the glue dried.
I think these kind of covers get such a bad name is because people don't take the time to do it correctly.
By the way mine was less then $110.00 If I remember it was $89.00. It is made by "DASHTOP".
