Simple job = NIGHTMARE ... suggestions ?
My power steering pump pulley has been warped for a while. Today I thought I would put on the new one. I've swapped them out before. The nut is off and the old pulley will rattle in your hand.....but will not come off the shaft. Only moves about 1/8th of an inch on the shaft.....acts like it is binding on the "key".
It's such tight quarters that I can't get to it with my SLEDGE HAMMER ....
need to take the unit out and do it off the car....i'm doing mine tomorrow........ i'm getting new pulleys........ u will need a puller also if u have a press fit pulley....not sure on keyed pulleys

If it is moveing on the shaft any I agree with you it sounds like it is binding on the key. You need to pull the pump off and look inside the keyway hole and see if you can use a small pic and straighten up the key and then it should slide off.
I had one of these and the only way I could remove the pully was with a cutting torch. The pully had gotten loose and made the keyway deformened and tore up the shaft and pully. If the keyway is deformed and turned the wrong way it will not come off even with a puller.
If the pully is loose on the shaft I do not think the puller will help you.

Wills670.......Thanks....I think you are right...a "key style" normally will just slide off. I have "borrowed" a puller just in case. I will remove the pump today and "jiggle" the key with a very small screwdriver or a very BIG HAMMER !

OK...it was a "keyed" pulley and it should not have required a puller. But I ended up taking the whole pump off as you guys suggested....and cleaned it up nicely and installed the new pulley. I actually did use a puller to remove the old pulley, but the key was not "buggered up"...I'm not sure why it was so hard to get off.
It's done and back together....I think I had a good bit of vibration from the warped pulley....between the fresh pulley and the fresh Q-Jet ( built by Lars )....it's crazy how smooth this old car idles now.
