I'm on my second repair fixing some bad scratches where I use touch up paint to fill scratches. Then I use 2000 grit to bring back level. Then rubbing compound and then polishing compound. And finally two coats of wax. But in the two tries so far I can still see dullness compared to the nice shiny original clear coat existing paint job.
So is there a trick I'm missing or is it impossible to bring repair back to perfection since clear coat has been removed? Maybe a different product works better? I need some expert advise. THX
Your going to get a dozen different opinions based on brand preferrence including your own. I use Meguiars and 3M products. Sounds like you have the correct technique for the paint, next it's a matter of starting with a course compound and gradually working down to finer compounds to remove the haze from sanding.
If you are doing this by hand, it will take longer to get the results you are asking. Most products on the market to obtain show quality results are designed for machine use. A small orbital polisher will give you better and faster results. Porter Cable has an excellent machine for around $150, high quality, easy to use, won't burn, but I'd practice on the daily driver first to get the hang of it. Always use clean microfiber towels or cotton diapers, or 100% cotton non-graphic t-shirts to remove the excess polishes.
The four products I recommend in order of use after sanding are below. You need to be the judge on how thick your clear coat is, don't over sand. You want to control the finish (orange peal) and shine of the spot area to match the rest of the car.
1. Meguars Fine Cut Cleaner (no more than a couple applications)
2. Meguars Machine Glaze (2 or 3 applications)
3. 3M Perfect-It Finishing Glaze (1 or 2 applications)
Optional, if still not shiny enough:
4. 3M Perfect-It 3000 Trizact Polish or Meguiars Swirl Mark Remover.

Probably a stupid question, but are you just using color, or are you also use a daub of clear ???
Just color, no clear. I use a finger nail polish brush and just barely fill the crack/scratches. This of course falls outside the scratch some so then I use the 2000 to get it back to even.
Ive been trying to use that blob remover they sell, but all that happens is it pulls the paint out of the scratch. Im so pissed because it wasnt cheap and I still have the scratches.
