Sidepipes again
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...e=STRK:MEWA:IT
if so can you tell me what brand they are? they look like the
patriot sidepipes that J C Whitney sells to me.
also if someone with a 255/60/15 tire with stock ride height
running sidepipes could please tell me
the measurment from the bottom of the pipes to the ground it
would be appreciated as i am really leaning towards sidepipes
now, especially after talking to my exhaust shop guy here in
central,NJ.
he owns 65,66 and 96 Corvettes at this time and says there is
nothing like sidepipes.
I would rather something that mounts level (or close to it) with the top of the rocker panels for a "cleaner" more original look.
They are also known to rust out pretty quickly.
Just my opinion though...
Jim
These are exactly what I installed on my '79 last year, came with the car from the PO. If you mount them like they suggest you won't make it out of the driveway...entirely too low. Bang out the brackets and mount under the rocker panel and clearance is OK. I expect to modify the mount a little to raise it higher and give more clearance. So far speed bumps are the main fear and they're OK if you go slow.
They rust. The drivers side especially, right at the piont where the barrel turns. Expect to paint at least annually with hi temp flat black.
They sound great...no complaints here.
The shields do an excellent job of keeping them cool, but they too are prone to rust. I pulled mine for winter storage (outside under wraps).
I've seen other posts where there were more parts to the kit and the tubes themselves were chromed, un upgrade to the listing you have. You'll need to modify the downpipe to tie in. I managed to do it with off the shelf parts but you'd do well to go to mufflex or some of the locals (Mufflex wanted $330 to install but they needed to swap out a broken stud from my manifold). I expect they can custom mount them higher. Don't be afraid to notch the rockers if need be.
Hope this helps,
Steve

are you back together and on the road? if so can i come over an hear and see them on the car?
i actually use fucello's for all my exhaust work
jimmy worked for mufflex for 15 years before opening his own shop
about 10 years ago. he did all my cars from the early 80s when he was at mufflex and everything at his own shop since he opened up there on south oldern ave.
since mine is garaged and will only be driven about 1500 miles per year if that im just wondering how they would hold up?
by the way what size tires are you running

I'm up in the air right now with the rear on the bench...hopefully I'll be on land by late April. As soon as I'm able we'll get together so you can check it out.
I expect you'd be fine with them if garaged and maintained, especially if you have a friend who can help with a pro install.
I have 255 x 60 on the rear and (I think) 225 x 70 on the front. I'm hoping to gain a little ride height with the composite spring I'm ready to put in so clearance should improve.
that would be excellent this way i can gauge if i really want to
go with sidepipes. i am pretty much set for them but was leary due to
the low compression of the late model engines.
im switching over to the 255/60/15s all the way around on mine
within the next 2 weeks. leaning towards bf goodrich ta's
