Can someone tell me please how many digits should be in the number on the block. ( Im looking to buy ) Owner said original block, but looks to be re stamped. How do i tell the difference.
I think there should be 2 sets of stampings on pad.One is engine
assembly stamping and other is VIN stamping. Small block should be
" V" then 4 numbers for month and day assem. then 3 letters for
engine type. The VIN should start with 1 then 2 then S then final
6 digits of cars VIN. Someone else can probably do a better job of
explaining but this may help You.
Should look similar to this (this is a '71) . The fuel line is covering the assembly date. The last 6 numbers of the set on the left should match the car's vin as stated.

The 72 that we just purchased has the same type of stamping as seen in this picture.
