Hi- I have a what appears to be a 72 stingray, which should have a 454/4 spd in it- the VIN is 1Z37W2S503498 but when I look at the suffix code on the passenger front block, the number there is
11S126337. Also, very faintly tapped on the pad is what appears to be- T0807 (then a 0,9 or 6) then XA- the manifold has GMT (or a cross, instead of a T) , the number 1, then below it this number- 6263753. I know it is a BB, I cant quite read any numbers on the rear drivers side (yet) ..and havent pulled the valve covers to check anything else. I have the black book, and can decode the VIN, but the suffix throws me off- shouldnt part of that number match the VIN if they are matching #'s? if it isnt a 454, what other BB could it be?
T= Tonawanda Plant; 08 = August; 07 = day of month.........you need to clarify the 0,6 or 9; 0XA and 9XA are both 1989-1990 454 Marine engines......also, you need to get the block casting number for further info.....

I take it the block casting numbers are on the drivers side rear part of the engine?
thanks again

OOH RAH... Semper Fi.
I see you got one of those rare Marine blocks!
If the 0XA and the 9XA codes are from marine engines, then it does not appear to be a numbers matching engine for your car. While the car may have been a 454 BB car at one time, it may have a replacement engine in it. All that means is that you can modify it without destroying any of the originality it once had without worrying about decreaseing the value any! That seems to be a blessing in disguise to many owners.

Good luck with your investigation.

Pffft screw matching numbers, what's the point of it if you can't enjoy it by making it how you like?
Mine was numbers matching. WAS! Who cares about a stock '81? Snooze alert! Now who cares about an '81 with an upgraded suspension, 4 speed AOD, tougher rear end, and a 454 small block that does over 500hp on pump gas?

Not if he paid the $ for a numbers matching BB car.
Thanks for all the input- the car is actually in my g/f garage, was thinking of buying it from the owner if I can get it for a deal. the body appears to be in great shape as well as the interior.. I'll try and dig up more info on the numbers this week.
