How do you paint urethane bumpers?
I bought a replacement urethane front bumper from Ecklers and I will be painting it. I've never painted urethane body parts before. Is there anything special you have to do? Special paint, additives, etc.

There are 2 schools of thought on urethane bumper finishing. Some say, if you paint the bumper mounted to the car you don't need flex additives. Or if you paint it off the car, you definately need flex additives. I always use the flex additive, you never know what might hit the bumper and crack the paint later on. Here are the products I use:
1. Sand the bumper with 400.
2. Some people don't prime urethane, but I do so that I can remove defects from the mold and block sand for a smoother finish. Use Transtar Hydroflex Waterborne Primer. 2 coats straight, no reduction. Allow to dry at least one day, then wet sand with 400 to remove defects. then switch to 600 if the bumper looks smooth and there are no pits. If you sand through, recoat and wait a nother day to sand again. Get the data sheet from their web site so that you'll have all the necessary product info.http://www.tat-co.com/version2/produ...es.asp?catid=8
3. Any brand of basecoat and clear coat is compatible as a topcoat with the above primer. You will need to add flex additive to both the base and clear. Get the data sheets on the base and the clear so you'll have the mixing directions, cure times and polishing time. Good Luck!

One bit of advice I didn't see mentioned. Make sure you tial fit the bumper to the car before you paint. If it needs any tweeking you want to know before its painted.
