In 1968 black painted Corvettes only accounted for 3% of the total sales. It just wasn't a popular color choice then so they dropped it. The greens and blues were the color of choice in 1969. They didn't re-introduce black until 1977

So are you saying that black wasn't a choice in 1969? The reason I ask is because there's a black 1969 that I might be interested in and I was wondering if black was rare or even available?
No, black was available in '69 I just didn't have the figures for how many cars were painted that color but the '68 figures showed a decline in people choosing black. If the 1969 build year had been as short as the other years there probably would have been less black cars than in 1968.
In 1968 there were 708 corvettes painted black, according to the Corvette Black Book. That was out of a total of 28,566 built. In 1969 there are no totals available for any exterior colors on corvettes. Although approx. half of the corvettes built in 1969 had black vinyl or leather interiors. According to the Corvette Black Book.
I don't believe black was a choice in '71. Have heard that it had something to do with the quality from the manufacturer. Mine was originally War Bonnet Yellow.
Weren't there black Cameros and Chevelles in the early 70's?
As a matter of fact a Black/Black 69 Big Block vert will set you back a pretty penny, thats if you could find one. There is a 69 427/435 Black/Black coupe for sale and the owner wants 135,000...JERRY
I have a '69 vert, Tuxedo black, original paint. This color is rare for '69, exactly how rare is unknown. The '68 percentage is the best approximation I know of.
Rare enough that many people aren't aware that there were black '69s. Then again, many people aren't aware that '69 427/435 could come with an automatic, PS, and PB.
It appears that black was phased out due to lack of demand in late '60's not due to paint quality issues.
